I took a lotta shit in high school for digging comic books and now I finally feel justified. 1989 was the height of the black and white explosion and the art form was finally being explored as the rich medium it always could be. Unfortunately everybody got greedy and the industry nearly collapsed. That's when Hollywood took over, betting big bucks on "pre-sold franchises" and super heroes from those "nerdy funny books". Judging by the landscape of today's popular culture - dorks like us saw the future.
